How to optimize spending for movie tickets (2 people)

I watch movies 2-3 times a month (mostly weekends). Typical booking is 2 tickets + snacks. Goal: maximize net rewards/discounts while avoiding cashback caps and excluded categories. Please suggest the best strategy across: (1) direct ticket booking on BookMyShow / PVR app, (2) buying gift vouchers and using them for tickets/snacks, (3) using UPI/wallet if it gives better value. I have Axis Magnus, ICICI Amazon Pay, and IndusInd Avios. Also open to recommendations for a dedicated movie card if it makes sense for ~₹1,500–₹2,500 per visit.

Rewardly Expert
  • Step 1 (always): verify where the biggest discount is coming from for that showtime — a (A) BookMyShow/PVR/INOX coupon/offer, (B) bank offer on card, or (C) gift voucher value. Pick ONE path; stacking usually fails because vouchers often void bank offers.
  • Step 2: split your spend into 2 buckets: (1) tickets and (2) F&B/snacks. Many offers apply only to tickets, while snacks at the counter/app may not qualify or may have separate voucher rules.
  • Best baseline strategy: use direct booking when there is a strong instant discount (e.g., flat off / % off / BOGO) on BookMyShow or the cinema app. Instant discounts beat points most of the time.
  • Voucher strategy (often best when there is NO good bank offer): buy BookMyShow/PVR/INOX vouchers from a rewards portal that gives accelerated rewards on your card (check if your card has higher rewards on 'gift vouchers' / 'rewards portal' spends). Then redeem vouchers for tickets or snacks as allowed.
  • Avoid common pitfalls: (1) convenience fees may not be payable via voucher, (2) some vouchers are ticket-only or F&B-only, (3) vouchers may have city/cinema restrictions and expiry, (4) bank offers often don’t apply if you pay using wallet/voucher balance.
  • For your 3 cards: ICICI Amazon Pay is great for simple cashback but usually has limited/seasonal movie offers; use it when there is a direct ICICI/BMS offer or when you want straightforward cashback on the final payment. Axis Magnus may give higher value if the transaction is eligible for points and not in excluded categories — but confirm exclusions/caps for entertainment and wallet/voucher spends. IndusInd Avios can be useful if you redeem Avios for travel value, but again confirm eligibility for entertainment/voucher MCCs.
  • Practical playbook for each movie night: (1) check BookMyShow offers page and your bank offers first, (2) if there is an instant discount/BOGO, pay directly with the eligible card, (3) if there is no good offer, consider vouchers bought via your best-earning route, (4) pay remaining convenience fee with the card that earns reliably.
  • If you watch 2–3 times/month, a dedicated movie card can make sense ONLY if you consistently use the monthly BOGO benefit and your preferred cinema is covered. Look for cards with simple BOGO on BookMyShow, low annual fee (or easy waiver), and clear monthly caps; otherwise, stick to rotating offers + vouchers.
  • To get better recommendations from the community: share (a) which cinemas you usually visit (PVR/INOX/Cinepolis etc.), (b) whether you book via BookMyShow or cinema app, (c) your typical split of tickets vs snacks, and (d) whether you prefer cashback or travel miles (Avios) redemption.
